From research to action: A cognitive-based learning program in the NSW Rural Fire Service

In September 2003 Managing Director Alex Jerrim attended the 2003 Road Safety Research, Policing and Education Conference in Sydney. Its theme was 'From research to action'. At the conference Alex had the opportunity to present two papers.

This is the first paper. It described our company's activities in translating research into action.

Specifically, he outlined the new program Driver Improvement Consultancy has been working on for the New South Wales Rural Fire Service.

Driver Training and Education Programs of the Future

Report No: 03/03

Report Date: October 2003

Abstract

Driver training and education as a way of improving driving skills among inexperienced drivers is a complex subject. A worldwide review of driver training and related education programs, research and contemporary psychological models of learning and education revealed that no clear blueprint for the development of leading edge, driver training, education and development programs exists, although several conclusions can be drawn:

  • Training programs of the future will need to evolve from the current conventional skill-based instructional training to focus on higher order learning and to address driver development more broadly.
  • Training/education cannot replace the need for novices to receive large amounts of on-road, in car experience at the learner level.
  • Further development of programs that focus on higher order skill development is needed. If evaluated and found to be effective, this may be used to supplement substantial in-car experience. There may be value in piloting programs that have been successful overseas.
  • Licensing systems that require extensive pre-licence experience have the potential to positively influence the nature of learner driver development.
