Between 1998 and 2000 Driver Improvement Consultancy Pty Ltd (DIC) conducted needs assessments for several Australian ambulance services. Among other things, the assessments revealed inappropriate driving practices were making it harder for these organisations to achieve their mission - the direct and hidden costs were significant. |
|
|
However, the Services were not in a good position to respond to inappropriate driving practices because they had no well-documented account of how they expected people to drive. They could not validly assess personnel's driving, objectively critique their performance or provide purposeful remedial training. Nor did they have a standard to train new personnel to. |

In November 2000 DIC published a Driver Competency Standard for ambulance services. The aim of the standard was to specify how ambulances should be driven in order to provide the best achievable patient care. |

Several ambulance services have purchased the standard. The CD-ROM that accompanies this website now provides resources for these and other services to help personnel:

The purpose of the site and the CD-ROM is to provide ambulances services with a modern and comprehensive suite of resources that can help them raise and maintain driving standards. |

Many of the resources will suit other Emergency Services and can easily be adapted. Contact us to find out more. |
