Unit 1

Operate the vehicle

Element 1

Ensures that the vehicle is in operational order

PC (b)
Detects faults in the vehicle and its equipment

notes:

Conducts a pre-drive vehicle check at the start of a shift. The check should be systematic and based on an Operational Procedure, checklist or a valid local procedure.

Matches frequency of checks to the circumstances. More frequent checks should be made of items that are known to have high use or are vulnerable to damage. Less frequent checks of stable items are acceptable when the vehicle is dedicated to one operator.

Can explain:

  • the relevant procedures for checking Service vehicles
  • the critical issues of tyre safety (including checking tyres when they are cold), their condition, correct pressure, importance of checking valve caps and the spare tyre
  • OH&S issues relevant to vehicle checks
  • the function of the mechanical items listed in the daily checklist
  • the essential differences between petrol and diesel engines
