Unit 1

Operate the vehicle

Element 3

Makes himself or herself familiar with the vehicle

PC (d)
Compensates for unfamiliarity with the vehicle

notes:

Compensating can include driving slower than usual, keeping larger stopping distances, ignoring passenger's conversation.

Familiarity can be judged using the three-stage scale below. Even competent drivers will have to move through these stages. They should also be able to recognise which stage they are at.

Amount of attention

Ability to talk …

And what eyes do

Full attention

Driver has to put full attention into doing the task.

The driver can carry on a casual conversation while performing the task.

Driver's vision drops. When using the controls the driver takes the eyes off the road for some time.

Some attention

The driver has to allocate some attention to the task.

The driver can carry on a casual conversation while performing the task.

The driver sees what's happening immediately around the vehicle. If the driver has to use the controls, he or she takes just a quick look to confirm their position.

'Automatic'

The driver doesn't have to put conscious attention into the task. Operating the vehicle is 'automatic' - they are familiar with it.

While performing the task, the driver can state random odd numbers between one and nine-teen with no more than a second's interval.

The driver keeps scanning ahead, to the sides and in the mirrors. If the driver has to use the controls, he or she barely glimpses at them.
