Unit 2

Drive in road and traffic system

Element 3

Drives efficiently in traffic system

PC (a)
Makes progress when required

notes:

Progressive driving is a mode of driving that aims to minimise the time it takes to drive legally from one point to another. Progressive driving is a requirement only when the situation warrants it. Drivers can choose to 'go with the flow' when a more relaxed style of driving is appropriate. When this criterion is assessed the driver must be told that the situation warrants progressive driving.

The following points describe characteristics of the progressive driver.

  • Is assertive and decisive
  • Chooses to turn or diverge only when it will make an appreciable difference to average speed (avoids unnecessarily changing lanes)
  • Makes the most of overtaking opportunities
  • Performs well in unfamiliar territory because the driver understands traffic systems
