Unit 3

Keep people and vehicles safe

Element 2

Drives in a manner that reflects valuing of life and property

PC (b)
Provides reasons for risk-taking that demonstrate considered thought

notes:

For this criterion, drivers are required to:

  • acknowledge events in which they did not do all that was reasonably possible to minimise the chances of harm
  • provide a reason for their risk-taking that demonstrates they have thought objectively about the event(s) and considered the merit in their decision

The model of competence expressed in this competency standard acknowledges that drivers will make errors and that risk-taking is a normal part of human behaviour. The criterion aims to encourage personnel to talk openly and objectively about it.

This criterion will be assessed by questioning the driver after he or she has taken a risk, and through discussion.
