notes:

Applies an internalising thinking style.

Can align their driving errors to the relevant performance criteria in the standard and describe any differences between the two.

Can trace the probable reasons and causes for any error. For example:

  • lack of attention caused by the mind attending to other tasks or being occupied with learning new tasks
  • being unmotivated to slow down because of a desire for risk-taking (costs of cautious behaviour too great, benefit of cautious behaviour too small, benefit in risk-taking too great, or benefit in being cautious of too little value)
  • misunderstanding or lack of knowledge caused by poor instruction
  • unintentional error caused by inappropriate habit

Where values, beliefs, thinking styles or motivations are the reason for behaviour differing from the standard, the driver must demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on their way of seeing things. The driver is reflecting critically when they make objective observations about, and constructively challenge, their own thinking - they do not defend their thinking.

For this criterion, the quality of the self-examination is more important than what the driver ultimately decides to do.

This criterion can be assessed in a group learning environment or on-road during feedback sessions.
