Unit 3

Keep people and vehicles safe

Element 5

Reviews and adjusts driving

PC (f)
Recognises good performance

notes:

This criterion includes recognising both the driver's own and others' good performance. Driving is an independent activity and often there is no one present to reward good performance. Human behaviour requires positive reinforcement, particularly when the behaviour requires much effort (as aspects of driving do). The driver can benefit from recognising his or her own good performance and have a strong influence on others' behaviour.

Examples of good performance include:

  • applying those parts of the standard that require particular effort in workplace conditions
  • putting additional effort into learning new skills or changing a habit
  • avoiding a potential crash, having applied the low-risk driving principles specified in Unit 3

Good performance in this context relates to the soft components (motivational/psychological) of driving and not performance in hard components such as control skills.

Examples of recognition are a positive comment or gesture, a note in assessment reports and official written acknowledgements.
