notes: |
When driving between the more obvious hazards, the driver notices and responds to less obvious ones, including:

The driver need not necessarily slow for these hazards but there must be evidence of their eyes locating the hazard and, where necessary, of an early and appropriate response. This may involve easing up on the accelerator or adjusting the position of the ambulance. |

Note: Research has identified that ambulance personnel responding to an emergency tend not to be responsive to less significant hazards; they focus on the more obvious and maintain a constant speed between these hazards. Researchers say this may be because constant emergency driving desensitises drivers - they become accustomed to it and to people getting out of the way once they recognise the emergency vehicle. |
