Unit 5

Attend emergencies

Element 3

Drives quickly where appropriate

PC (d)
Uses tyre grip efficiently

extra info

notes:

When travelling straight, uses the brakes and accelerator to achieve the optimum acceleration and deceleration for the situation.

At curves, coordinates brakes with steering, and then steering with the accelerator, in order to achieve optimum safe cornering performance for the chosen speed.

Applies the necessary pre-corner steering to improve the stability of the vehicle in the corner. (This is an extension of Unit 4 - Element 6 - PC (d) Maintains a stable patient platform.)

Minimises the pendulum effect in 'S' curves (see previous reference).

Coordinates inputs and road features such as camber and crossfall. (Road features are explained in Unit 2 - Element 5 - PC (a) Detects changes in road surface.)

Compensates for bumps and dips when, combined with the vehicle's speed, they effect tyre grip.

Note: This criterion must always be considered in the company of Unit 3 - Element 3 Responds to hazards. Using tyre grip efficiently cannot have priority over safety.

Can explain:

  • the principle of sharing tyre grip between brakes, steering and accelerator
  • the various factors that can influence tyre grip and vehicle control
  • the process of moving from the zone of grip to and beyond the limit of adhesion
  • the cornering line that best uses tyre grip and how this line is modified to comply with low-risk driving principles
  • the process of reading a corner 'backwards' in order to calculate a safe entry speed and cornering line
