Unit 5

Attend emergencies

Element 4

Manages traffic events

PC (b)
Alerts road users early

notes:

When using emergency provisions, has beacons operating for the duration of the emergency response or transport.

Uses the siren immediately whenever a road-user who should be aware of the ambulance's presence can be seen or could reasonably be expected to be present.

Relies on wail mostly and turns to yelp for specific events such as intersections or unresponsive road users.

Considers switching sirens off when:

  • other road users are unable to give way or pull over, or it could be dangerous if they did
  • stopped at traffic lights behind other vehicles and the ambulance driver is forced to wait
  • the ambulance is conveying a patient and the siren is not critical to get through traffic and the sound would affect the patient's condition
  • the vehicle's speed does not warrant it
  • in quiet or non-metropolitan areas
  • situations arise where any Service Policy says that the driver has discretion

Adopts a road position that improves the chances of other road users seeing the ambulance early.

Can explain why people might not hear sirens.
