Makes a conscious decision about manoeuvres that may catch other drivers by surprise |

notes: |
We can conclude from research into ambulance crashes that the following scenarios catch drivers by surprise. |
These crashes occurred in situations where the other driver was driving normally and legally, but for the emergency vehicle being present. When the crashes were analysed, the ambulance drivers would have been able to avoid the crashes if they had applied low-risk driving techniques. |
For this criterion, drivers are required to apply full attention to their driving, excluding all that's not relevant to the manoeuvre when in these types of situations. |
A driver performing to the standard will consciously note information that indicates whether the manoeuvre is safe. |
Unit 3 - Element 1 - PC (f) Manages attention has more information about conscious performance. Unit 3 - Element 3 - PC (c) Recognises how hazards could threaten safety and PC (d) Makes early adjustments in response to hazards, have information about perceiving risks. |
