Unit 5

Attend emergencies

Element 5

Moderates the influence of competing needs or motivations

PC (b)
Moderates the need to take unreasonable risks

notes:

Definition: An unreasonable risk is 'a risk that a person highly motivated to avoid harm and skilled in the techniques of low-risk driving would reject'.

Reflecting back over a response and self-talk during it are two recognised methods for moderating behaviour.

Willingly modifies driving when a passenger expresses safety concerns.

Produces well thought-out and informed reasons for the risks they are taking on an emergency.

No emergency is so great that it justifies the driver taking an unreasonable risk. The Service's view is that it is far better to arrive in a reasonable time than not at all or late because of having to stop after a crash or incident. Drivers have much control over the level of risk they accept. For those who are risk-takers, to meet this criterion will take much self-discipline.
