Unit 5

Attend emergencies

Element 6

Manages the situation at the patient's location

PC (b)
Approaches and stops at the scene to enable a safe and effective working environment and an easy departure

notes:

Where possible, the parking position should help to:

  • protect personnel working at the scene
  • other road users see the ambulance but not be dazzled
  • keep exhaust fumes away from patients
  • light the scene
  • permit easy access to equipment
  • maintain a safe distance from known hazards or known potential hazards
  • provide protection from the elements

Events at the scene can take much of the driver's attention as he or she approaches. It may leave insufficient attention for stopping and securing the vehicle safely (particularly for new personnel). Not rushing and using well-practised stopping procedures will help.

This criterion should be read in conjunction with Unit 4 - Element 4 Manoeuvres the vehicle.
