Unit 5

Attend emergencies

Element 7

Transports patient using emergency provisions

PC (c)
Adjusts emergency driving to take account of patient care and the attending crew's safety

notes:

In emergency transport situations the attending crew may be unrestrained and giving emergency clinical care. Thus, emergency transport driving may require the driver to moderate his or her actions. The driver must remember that his or her perception of the vehicle's stability from the driver's seat is not an accurate picture of stability in the patient's compartment.

When compared to emergency response driving, transport conditions may require the driver to:

  • increase the level of communication with the attending crew
  • alert the attending crew earlier to any significant changes in speed or direction
  • increase braking distances and crash avoidance space
  • enter and take turns slower
  • accelerate more gently
  • avoid or modify any emergency vehicle manoeuvre that could adversely affect patient care or place the vehicle in a situation where evasive action could be required
